Does your office coffee machine need a water filter? Why it matters more than the beans

By Sam Foti

People spend a lot of time picking the coffee — the roast, the beans, the machine. Almost nobody asks about the water. But a cup of coffee is mostly water, and the water going into your machine affects both how the coffee tastes and how long the machine keeps working.

What's in the water

Municipal water in the GTA is safe to drink, but it's not built for coffee equipment. It carries chlorine, which comes through in the taste, and dissolved minerals that don't disappear when you heat them. Those minerals are where the real trouble starts.

Scale: the slow problem

When water heats up inside a coffee machine, the minerals come out and stick to the inside — the boiler, the heating elements, the lines. That's scale. It builds up slowly, so you don't notice it day to day, but over time it:

  • Slows the machine down, because the heating element has to work through a layer of buildup.
  • Changes the taste, because water isn't reaching the right temperature and flow isn't what it should be.
  • Causes breakdowns, because narrow lines and valves clog.

A bean-to-cup or a high-volume brewer running on unfiltered water will fight scale for the rest of its life. It's one of the most common reasons a machine that worked fine at install starts acting up a year later.

Taste: the fast problem

Scale takes time. Taste is immediate. Chlorine and off-flavours in the water come straight through in the cup, and no bean can fully cover them. A proper filter removes chlorine, sediment, and the taste and odour issues common in municipal water, so the coffee tastes like the coffee. Same goes for tea, and for the plain glass of water your team drinks out of the tap next to it.

Which machines need it most

The more water a machine heats and the more complex it is inside, the more filtration matters:

  • Bean-to-cup machines — lots of internal parts, and the equipment is the priciest to repair. Filtration is part of keeping them running.
  • High-volume drip and airpot brewers — heating a lot of water all day means a lot of scale.
  • Single-cup pod machines — lower volume, but still worth it for taste.

I covered how to choose between those in how to choose office coffee for your GTA team.

Filters only work if they get changed

A filter that's two years past its change date isn't doing much. Standard sediment and carbon stages typically get swapped about every 6 months, depending on the unit and how much water it's handling. We track filter dates for every machine we service, so the change happens on schedule without anyone in the office having to remember.

Adding it to what you already have

If you already have coffee with us, adding water filtration is simple — same visit, same invoice. It can also cover your drinking water: I compared plumbed-in and bottled setups in office water: plumbed-in vs. bottled coolers.
